 A lot has happened in the past year and most of it not good. I'm going to try to update this blog more often now things are a little calmer!

Low Income Energy Assistance

Central Arkansas Development Council will take applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program January 7-11, 2013. The following information is for  Pulaski County only:

Applications will be taken beginning January 7th and 8th , 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., at the Arts and Crafts Building at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds, 2600 Howard Street in Little Rock. The first 600 customers will be seen each day at the event.
After the initial intake days in Pulaski county applications will be taken as follows:

• Arkansas Workforce Center of Jacksonville, #2 Crestview Plaza in Jacksonville. Applications will be accepted on a walk-in basis on Thursdays only, 8 am until Noon.This is limited to the first 50 customers.
• Arkansas Workforce Center of Little Rock, 5401 South University in Little Rock. Applications will be accepted on a walk-in basis only, Monday-Wednesday, 8 am until Noon.  Limited based on staff availability.

 Note: to qualify for LIHEAP assistance you must meet certain income guidelines. For example, for a household of 1 the monthly countable income is $1,481. Eligibility limits are set at 60% of the state's median income level.  

Countable income includes check stubs, child support, unemployment, housing utility assistance, SSI, SSA, TEA, VAS and retirement benefits.

To apply bring proof of income for all household members 18 years or older for the previous month, proof of child support, proof of unemployment for all household members age 18 and older, proof of social security, retirement, pensions, workman's comp or disability, proof of utility allowance and if no income, bring proof of how bills are being paid. Social security numbers and birth dates for all household members are required. Failure to provide verification requested may result in delay or denial of assistance. Allow agency 35 days to make payment. For more information, call your local CADC office.

Snow Armageddon 2012

 

 Like a lot of people we ended up without electricity over the holidays. Our power went out on Christmas due to the ice storm. It was finally turned back on the night of December 29th. I sent my kids (and husband) to my inlaws' house farther north so they would get a chance to play in the snow. Well they didn't get much snow there, but Little Rock sure did!

 

Several inches of snow..and ice, and trees falling down in the yard, and cold cold nights without power. I was outside when the transformers started blowing. What a spectacular light show!

 The trees cracked like gunfire all night long and one fell on the corner of my house. Our cat was not too happy about that. My 12 year old was begging to come home and did not understand just how cold it was in the house, and just how very icy the roads were!

We have two hermit crabs and they lived in my pocket with a hand warmer nestled beneath it until I could get them some heat.

After a few days I was able to go to my mom's house. She lives in the country, but her power only went out for a short time.

Update

I have let this blog lapse lately. First one of my children was diagnosed with food allergies and I stopped reviewing a lot of restaurants for various publications. Then I went back to school and my days were filled with schoolwork, lots of schoolwork!

More will be coming soon though, I promise!

METRO opening cooling centers statewide
LITTLE ROCK — METRO Founder Donnie Copeland announced today that the non-profit has teamed with its community partners to open cooling centers across the state.
METRO and its partners are offering Arkansans respite from the heat from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and noon to 8 p.m. Friday in various locations in the state. Additional sites will be continually added throughout the day as the temperatures climb past the century mark.
“The mercury keeps rising and creating a dangerous situation for Arkansans who don’t have air conditioning,” METRO Founder Donnie Copeland said. “No one should have to suffer in this deadly heat. These cooling centers will give people a much needed break.”
Copeland said he does not want to see a repeat of last year when Arkansas reported 21 heat-related deaths. He urges everyone to help those who are less fortunate.
“If you have neighbors, friends or family that you know are suffering in this heat, please check on them and get them to a cooling center, if possible,” Copeland said. “It could save a life, especially it is this hot outside.”
Copeland said businesses, churches or other non-profits that would like to be a Metro Cooling Center or support a center with water, can logon on to www.arkansasmetro.org. Individuals seeking a cooling center can also find a complete list on the website.
METRO is also conducting a statewide fan drive in an effort to cool Arkansas. The non-profit teamed up with Dollar General to provide fans for the underprivileged. Those who wish to contribute to the cause can call 501- 420-3824, logon to www.arkansasmetro.org or stop by a Dollar General, buy a fan and leave it at the store for the METRO network to distribute.
“Let’s pull together to help our fellow Arkansans in need,” Copeland said.

Other brands include Riverside Ground Turkey, Natural Lean Ground Turkey, Fit & Active Lean Ground Turkey, Spartan Ground Turkey and Shady Brook Farms Ground Turkey Burgers. The recall also includes ground turkey products packaged under the HEB, Safeway, Kroger, Randall's, Tom Thumb and Giant Eagle grocery store brands.

The recall also includes some ground turkey that isn't labeled at all, according to Cargill.

Little Rock, AR, November 1, 2010: Car care awareness and breast cancer research might be an unlikely pairing, but that’s just what’s happening at Ladies Raise Your Hood for the Cure! on Saturday, November 13^th from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at The Promenade at Chenal. Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts stores and area automotive repair shops are teaming up for a fun and entertaining event where participants can learn how to pop the hood on their own car, check the engine oil level, use a tire pressure gauge, and more – all in a friendly, one-on-one session with a professional automotive repair technician.

Rounding out the event are opportunities to shop with a variety of merchants, win awesome door prizes and take home a coupon book worth hundreds of dollars in savings on everything from jewelry to automotive repair. “Our idea is to present factual information about automotive maintenance in a setting that combines that opportunity with some other interesting things to do for a few hours on a Saturday,” says Elizabeth Estes, Training Director for Bumper to Bumper.

“We are thrilled to have Kelly Williams, former race car driver and automotive safety advocate, as our special guest,” continues Estes. “Kelly conducts women’s car care events across the United States and Canada, and with her “knowledge is power” philosophy, participants leave her sessions better informed of the importance and economy of maintaining their car. If we can help prevent just one woman from the frightening experience of being stranded on the side of the road, we will consider this event a huge success.” Williams will present sessions at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $5.00 each, and available for purchase at Little Rock area Bumper to Bumper stores or at the door on the day of the event. 100% of the ticket proceeds will benefit the Arkansas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Kelly Williams – Biographical Information

Just days after she earned her degree to become a high school teacher, Kelly Williams decided to explore a full-time career in race car driving. She knew racing was fun and she loved it. What she didn’t know is that through racing, she would one day also become a successful entrepreneur, business leader and television host.

Kelly won her first racing career victory at the Canadian National Exhibition in 1990 and in 1993, made her breakthrough as one of Ontario’s top drivers. That year, she won eight races and finished fourth in the travelling Goodyear Challenge Cup Series. She was also voted as the Most Popular Driver by the fans.

Then in 1994, Kelly took another step up in her career by competing in the CASCAR Late Model Series, the most prestigious arena for stock car racing in Canada. She became the first female driver to capture a win in the 14-year history of CASCAR racing that year. Although it was a qualifying race, she still holds that record today. Her best finish in the CASCAR series was fourth. She also finished tenth in National Series, earning another “Most Popular Driver” award from the fans in 1999. Kelly competed in the CASCAR Super Series for 10 years, securing sponsorships from GM Goodwrench, AOL Canada, Westburne Electric and Kawasaki.

While making a sure and steady rise up the stock car racing ladder, Kelly excelled in other areas of the motor sports field as well. As a member of the CART Pace Car Team for fifteen years, her natural driving skills flourished. In her role with the squad, she travelled around the world with Champcar Series and was the first person to pace a race in the Ford GT Supercar ever!

Now she teaches women about taking care of their car and loves every minute of it!
